The York Area Group's prime source of income for supporting the NYMR had been through the recycling. The group started collecting waste paper in the old waiting room on Pickering Station in late 1973 and in 1974 moved to the location at Poppleton on the outskirts of York. We enjoyed rent free accommodation with three owners over the years but finally in 2017 the location was scheduled for redevelopment. During this time, we processed approximately 3,100 tonnes of waste paper and cardboard, 7 tonnes of aluminium cans, 32 tonnes of aluminium foil and 103 tonnes of glass bringing in some £113k.
In December 2017, our recycling of aluminium foil was handed over to SNAPPY (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision York).
Folllowing a stay of execution, the team soldiered on with paper and cardboard until the very last container was jam packed from top to bottom on Wednesday 25th April 2018, finally vacating the building on 21st June.
